I am disappointed that you are using the Indian race as a foil for your bias about diamonds. I am not convinced that there is a diamond craze in India, instead there may be a strata of Indian society that can afford diamonds that couldn't before.
Historically, some of the finest Indian jewelry that goes back centuries incorporates diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and other fine colored stones as well as gold, gold, gold.
I would be the first person to decry conflict diamonds, but diamonds have been an important part of India's jewelry history for long before this was a concern--the use of diamonds in India is not new--how they are now being used may well be. But you can't fault one generation without taking into account the excesses of previous generations.
I can only think that you are uninformed about generational jewelry traditions in India.

Hearing about diamonds in stories told my grandmums and 'Amar chithra Katha'(a popular children's publication in regional languages) were an integral part of childhood for many present day Indians and this indeed, has sown seeds of curiosity amongst many Indians. The heroes in these stories were often rewarded by kings with diamonds and gold and silk etc.But diamonds were always way up the list!Almost everyone i have known here is curious to touch and feel it against their fingertips when they encounter a diamond for the first time because they have been wondering that for perhaps many many years now!It is their answer! But however, their their deepest curiosity is to try scratch glass with it and to see what happens!Blimey! Of course, there are many who are lured by the sheer financial value of it and go for those heavy priced ones. But most of them, just have to satiate their childhood curiosity about the diamond. This group mainly reach for the lower end diamonds in the market,as they are least bothered about the diamond being not very expensive and worth a bomb.It is their childhood curiosity answered. And it is a very Indian thing to commemorate important incidents in life with valuables.Gold used to be the norm.Diamonds are slowly cutting in,now that they are more affordable and available to be bought without the fear of being conned .

I agree with you, but the fact that you bring indians into the discussion totally blows this of proportion.
Indians go more for gold... all their weddings are basically littered with gold, if you didn't know, the damn place was once a country filled with gold and kings once the 'whites' came in, they were robbed as well.
But yeah, the fact that celebrities even want diamond i-pods are amazing, but their sheer pride of being able to afford it gets to them, and the beauty of it is actually quite stunning.

Of course there are industrial uses of diamonds to cut and polish, but those are typically smaller diamonds. Marketing of retail diamonds is materialistic/consumerism at its worst.
I hope that diamonds go out of fashion. The price is artificially inflated by cartels and they are used as a currency in the drug trade and the arms trade. Retail prices are rediculously high and many retailers are unscrupulous.

Gems don't serve any practical purpose, but their rarity and cost mean that they can't be obtained without sacrifice. The bond between love and sacrifice is deeply set within the human psyche--across the spectrum from religion to romance.

it is just like asking what is the use of money. it is property and mostly the price appreciate with time. look at the dollar now, it has been depreciating and so it would have been better if you had diamonds than dollars.

I think that you shouldn't be so quick to target the Indian nationality - Western society is just as obsessed with material possessions just for their rarity and value.
