Only the places north of the tropics are having winter just now while, at the same time, everywhere south of the tropics is experiencing summer.
The Earth spins daily on its north/south axis, producing our day and night. As it does so, the Earth also orbits the Sun once per year.
The Earth's own axis of spin points northwards to the 'Pole Star' (which is invisible from Australia) and southwards towards the 'Southern Cross' constellation (which is invisible from Europe) but this axis of spin is not parallel to the axis of the Earth's orbit around the Sun but inclined at an angle to it . This angle is currently 23° 26′ 22″ (though this angle slowly changes over the millenia probably because of changes in movements of the Earth's molten core).
A line joining the centre of the Earth to the centre of the Sun passes through the equator only twice per year (once at the Spring Equinox and once at the Autumnal Equinox). At the height of Summer in Earth's Northern Hemisphere, it cuts the Earth's surface at the 'Tropic of Cancer' lying 23° 26′ 22″ north of the Equator. Conversely, at the height of our Winter in the Northern Hemisphere the Sun lies directly above the 'Tropic of Capricorn', lying 23° 26′ 22″ south of the Equator.
Between the two tropics, local climate has no Winter or Summer but only two Rainy Seasons per year. North or south of these tropics, the seasons are Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn (Fall).
