I am a fairly good guitarist and can play pretty much anything (except for really fast solos). I'm looking for something in the $300-$500 range. Any ideas?

I used to have a Mexican rosewood acoustic guitar with an ebonized finger board. It had a beautiful warm sound, a really low action and was a pleasure to play. Unfortunately it got stolen.

I think those woods are now protected, but if you can find one second-hand you may be pleasantly surprised.

I think if you are as decent as you claim to be you would go to a local music store and just take a look at what they have to offer. You don't have to spend in the $300-$500 range to find a good quality guitar. Some of the best instruments I have bought were under $250.
I bought a circa mid 1980's Westone thunder-I Bass for $175 about a year ago and still consider it a steal. I also purchased a Samick Music Greg Bennett Signature Series Les Paul for $199 and enjoy that guitar over all the others in my collection and spent much more for them. Look around and see what you like. What others find to be good, others might see as junk.Stay away from anything Fender or Squire style! They are usually assembly line JUNK.

Edit: Drummer what does strings breaking have to do with the quality of a guitar? Your fender has not broke a string yet? Maybe you just don't really play it? You seemed very confused in the first place answering a guitar question and using the name drummer! I believe he wants to hear advice from people who actually play over those who receieved a japanese factory assembly line built squire from their parents for christmas last year.

In your price range try a Yamaha, Washburn or a Takamine G Series.
Do not buy a Jasmine which is the lower end of Takamine.
They are terrible and the action is horrible.

The G Series is a great guitar with an cutaway, which makes it easier to hit the higher frets.

Try going to you local guitar shop and playing different ones.
Find one that sounds warm not thin.

Bring someone else with you and have them sit in front of you and ask them how it sounds.

Do not buy a guitar with high action. You will only put your fingers thru hell.

Good luck, and I hope you find a nice guitar.

Buy a good quality USED one - for $500 you should be able to get a used acoustic that is just excellent, because you can get a great new one for about a grand. Play a lot of them, check other guitar players opinions on them, check the Harmony Central website for reviews of the instrument, and good luck!

Too bad, the best brand Martin is a little bit more expensive, but Takamine, Seagull or Ovation make good acoustic guitar for this price. Look at this site for good deals on guitars : http://guitar.edoodoo.com/guitar-acoustic.html

My boyfriend has had a Johnson for years and he loved it (I know, that sounds dirty, but it's really not!). He has moved on to another guitar as he's been writing more and he doesn't use the Johnson to record with, but he still writes some of his songs on it. He now uses an Ovation and that's his #1 choice for the money.

Why not look to see what some of your favorite guitar players are playing? Granted, theirs will be more expensive, but they might talk about what they played at the beginning and what they like. Just a thought.

Good luck!

Check this link out. After all, it's a Martin. I still have friend that come over and the first thing they want to do is play my D28. This isn't quite that quality, but come on, it is a Martin.
