I think somebody is scamming. Phone the Child Benefits Agenct to check that the letter is from them. Don't use the contact details on the letter you've received, because if the letter is fake so are the contact details. Look up the phone number, or go to your local benefits office.

Around 7.5 million households will be getting these letters because it is a legal requirement under the data protection act. The biggest risk is that of identity theft but that is really difficult to get away with for long. i wouldn't worry too much as i suspect the disks will turn up somewhere within HMRC.

I think I would call someone and find out. I wouldn't however call the number on the letter. It could be a scam of some sort. I think I would contact the social security office and ask them for help.

Well the advice is just be vigilant with your bank account (I'd recommend signing up for their online services as then you can see everything on screen regularly) Also in the unlikely event that things appear to have been signed up for without your knowledge, dispute it immediately. Remember, if you're an innocent victim of fraud then you're not liable for a penny.

For peace of mind I would suggest also talking to your bank. you could do two things: advise them that you are one of the people at risk from this episode, and ask them what extra precautions they are taking to monitor the accounts for unusual activity of those people affected.
