I'm planning to buy my dad a DVD for christmas (because he likes watching movies a lot). His favorite movies include:
-The March of the Penguins
-The Godfather
-Gladiator
-Cirque du Soleil (french circus performance)

Basically, he likes nonfiction (or somewhat nonfiction) and serious movies. What would you recommend I get?

Lord of War with Nicholas Cage. It is based on a true story about an arms dealer. It is serious and based on a true story, though can be brutal at times. It is a fantastic movie.

Braveheart (Mel Gibson) or Saving Private Ryan (Tom Hanks)

I did a quick search on Amazon, for Gladiator and The Godfather...
Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan were two movies that customers had bought when buying Gladiator of The Godfather.
Another was The Shawshank Redemption.

Your Dad'll love Saving Private Ryan if he loved Gladiator, they are two of my favourites in War and Historic films.

The Shawshank Redemption is a fantastic movie based in a city state prison, starring Morgan Freeman... it's a spectical!

White Squall is one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life!! It's a true story about a ship, called the Albotross, going down in the 20's or 30's. It had teenaged boys on it, who were there because the ship was a learning ship. They went there after high school as a college type learning environment. There's very little about the "schooling" part, but a lot about how each boy's life was changed while on the ship. It's funny, it's sad, it's GREAT!!! Jeff Bridges is the captain. It's honestly one of the freatest movies of all time.

Or maybe go with classics like Bridge on the River Kwai, The Great Escape, The Longest Day, or Lawrence of Arabia!

"The Negotiator" if he has a interest in law enforcement officers. relatively large action picture that shows an honest volume of emotions. nevertheless that's fiction yet has a lifelike sense to it. no longer something feels like it ought to on no account take place.
