When you save the file, make sure that "Save as type:" is set to "All Files" then add the extenstion to your file name, e.g. if you want to call your page "index" then save it as "index.html".

Just tested this and it works so you can use htm, html or indeed any extension name that you want.

You can rename it with the HTML extension. Once it is named that, if you R-click on it and "Open With" Notepad, you may do your editing and Notepad will save it as an HTML file just fine.

I did all my early HTML programming with Notepad. It's the only way to learn what's going on. Using one of the other programs is kinda like using a calculator instead of doing the calculations by hand; you get the answer, but you havent learned.

Just include the extension in the file name. It will change it, even if no option is shown:
Save As:
trial.php or
trial.html or
trial.htm

If you include an extension in the file name, notepad will save it as it.

For future reference.
You can save files as .html
And it's .html not .htm
Either will work but just stick with .html
for now.

Go to
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
Find and click on Folder Options
On the top of the Folder Options window
click on the 'View' tab.

In the advanced settings box (middle of the window)
Find 'Hide extensions for known file types'
(you'll have to scroll down a bit)
and un-check the box.
Click 'Ok'.

Now when you want to make a .html file you can save it as a
normal text document and then you can rename it.

If your file name is index.txt
Then you can rename it to index.html

You can now change file extensions without any hassle.

You can rename it afterwards, answer above is wrong - .html is fine.

The real solution is to get a text editor - my pick is jEdit - http://www.jedit.org , there are many others, so I'd recommend trying a few out. These are designed around editing things other than plain text, and so let you pick the correct extension for the job.

The world wide web is expanding at an exponential price and hundreds or individuals and businesses launch even 1000's of new sites each and every single day so this means there is an growing demand for freelance writers to create content for these web sites.
