My husband (Japanese) and I (American) have had some really big arguments about this since the beginning of our marriage as we are from completely different cultures both country and family wise. He believes that common sense does not exist, that all the knowledge we have has to be learned by experience or it has to be taught. If this is the case, how should we be educating our children? What do you think?

Well your husband does prove a point. Some of lifes best lessons are learnt from mistakes. Its a large world out there, and the best way to educate your children is to teach them the rights from wrongs, and release them out into the world and let them experience life for themselves, because only they can truly figure out the best for them.

There are a lot of intelligent people that don't have common sense. If they weren't taught it in a book or told by someone else they can't figure it out. Just look at government. They jump into a war without first figuring out all the possibilities.
Just give an intellectually intelligent person a child's toy to put together without the instructions and you'll see how common sense comes into play. I'll take common sense over IQ for day to day living.
Excuse me, I have to show my husband how to put the kids toys together now.

the belief of C.S. is very subjective and from my very own journey, i've got had knuckle draggers declare i did no longer have any person-friendly experience because of the fact from their attitude, anybody is meant to nicely known all the commonsense attributes of a U.S. army Boatswain mate and in case you do no longer, they are genuinely calling anybody who isn't a Boatswains mate, an entire fool. From my very own attitude, i individually did no longer get the memo as quickly as I joined the army returned interior the 80's that I had to evaluate a thank you to do different scores activity standards regardless of if i might basically do it because of the fact installation the Quarterdeck grew to become into seen so tedious that my score had to do it because of the fact our kit grew to become into close down in simple terms before pulling into port, so as a substitute of manning the sea & Anchor factor, we had to establish all the coolest reflects, chief boards, (genuinely an in/out call board for all Khaki variety Chiefs/officers on board that distinctive deliver) deliver's crest/motto foot-mat, and so on. maximum people who anticipate they have person-friendly experience are basically projecting their very own conceitedness onto anybody they pick to insult via insisting that denigrated persons or communities are incompetent, defective, lazy or any marginalizing code phrases used to make "sub-oftentimes occurring" human beings experience no longer so good as smug ego-maniacs. utilising a blanket accusation via a pretend generalization of C.S. loss of or bragging approximately an overabundance of, is a definite-fireplace approach of utilising artificially exaggerated unfamiliarity against a man or woman as a fashion to create an air of secrecy of self-doubt interior people who by using no fault of their very own, weren't born with a genetic predisposition for innate information or they only did no longer soak up the comparable volume of lifestyles-lengthy getting to understand journey interior their very own praxis. there is often the prospect that via pretending to have C.S. a man or woman could desire to basically be utilising ridicule of yet another guy or woman as a distraction to dodge anybody from examining that they have got as little C.S. because of the fact the guy they are utilising as a ruse to dodge their very own shortcomings.
