I am planning to visit Japan, more specifically Tokyo, either next summer or the summer after that, whenever I get enough money. I would need a vehicle. As of next summer I would be 16, and probably have my license. I need to know if I could rent a car.

And I am pretty sure I can drive at 16 or 17 provided I apply and recieve an international drivers liscense.

Driving age in Japan is 18. So you have to be 18 or older to rent a car.

In Japan you must be 18 to drive, so even with an international license you would be unable to do so. Even American military family members with valid driver's licenses can not drive off base in Japan until the age of 18! As for renting a car, you are not old enough to sign any legal contracts, so again that would make the point moot. Add in that very, very few car rental companies will rent to anyone under the age of 21, even with a credit card! Besides, driving in Japan is very different than driving stateside and certainly not a good idea for a realtively new driver to even try!

As some people say you can't drive at all unless you are 18, that is not true, if you are not a Japanese native.
According to Nippon rent-a-car website, it states that anyone with a valid driver's license can rent a car.
If you don't have a valid Japanese driver's license however, you do need a valid international driver's license. And you need your passport as well.
However, if you are not over 21, they can disapprove you from getting some insurance policy, and make you listen to a lesson on safe driving skills if they feel that you are unfamiliar with the road rules.

You need to be 18 to sign any contract. And you will need an international license to drive there. Also remember they drive on the left hand side of the road. No, you don't "need" a car there. Most teenagers don't have one. Their public transportation is very good. You should also realize Japan is not a cheap place to viist. If you're under 18, it will also be harder to find a place to stay.

What Joeriental says is true! I had to pay 30000 yen for a scratch that could have been repaired with one of those touch up pens. I had paid extra for insurance to cover the deductible, but they told me that was no good as I had no police report on my tiny scratch!?
I think you will find that the minimun age to get the IDP is 18, regardless of the policy of the jurisdiction that issues the original license.

Beware. Japanese rent-a-car shop will ask you to pay a deductible of the car insurance even for a minor scratch.
