Most will probably not like it. Some of it is probably true, but an Archbishop in the Episcopalian church isn't running this country, and there are some very evil things about the history of the church as well - the Archbishop should read some more about the history of the church, which was started by Henry VIII because he couldn't get a divorce from the pope... that's right... good old "pious" Henry VIII started the Episcopal church - I used to be a member, and one of the king's numerous ILLEGITIMATE descendants!

The fact that he's the Archbishop of Canterbury doesn't carry a lot of weight with me, but he's definitely right about America's recent foreign policy, and his comparison of the twilight of our empire to that of the British Empire.


What shocks me is the number of Americans who seem to really believe that we invaded Iraq to help the Iraqi people and to rid the world of a horrible dictator. No nation has ever waged war for altruistic reasons such as spreading democracy, liberating the downtrodden, or any such claptrap, period, end of story. Wars are waged for political control and control of resources. Any nation that invades another country without violent provocation is in the wrong, and that's precisely what we have done in Iraq. We also created another Islamic theocracy in the process, and destabilized the whole region, requiring our overstretched military to remain indefinitely.


So I guess I only partly agree with the Archbishop.

America's current foreign policy is only part evil, and part plain old stupid.

Nothing in this world could have made Osama bin Laden happier than the US invasion of Iraq.

I'm pretty used to seeing articles saying "American is evil.. American is bullying other people.. Americans are idiots..."

you'll probably get a lot of people agreeing with this article even here in the USA but in my opinion for how strong the USA is, were pretty darn nice. And I don't think we aren't trying to gain anything of this, besides trying to keep us safe. The war has cost us a ton of money. People who say it was for oil are idiots. And I disagree with him saying saying it was to gain influence. I think we knew that other countries would disagree with this war and that war is rarely popular; I think the president knew that when we went in.

The guy is basically saying violence is never the answer but at the time all of our best intelligence told us that saddam probably had WMD. Both major republicans and democrats agreed he probably did at the time. Even Hilary Clinton and a lot of other major Dems.

Anyways that's my opinion on it. Didn't hear about it till just now, and while it may be a big deal over in the UK, most Americans have never heard of this guy or what he's saying and probably will just think of him as just some other guy yelling at us. You'll probably get a 50/50 or a 60/40 split of people agreeing with it or disagreeing. That's my guess anyways.
