My car has been reversed into - making a nice big dent in the bonnet. Other than that, there's nothing wrong with it, its perfectly mechanically sound and runs well, and is fully serviced. But its 5 years old and has a lot of miles on the clock, its probably not worth any more than about £2-£2.5k, and its possible the repairs are going to cost more than this. I absolutely do not want the car written off as I'm emotionally attached to it (its the only car I've ever had from new), however if it is written off, how much do you get? The market value of the car? Or enough to buy a reasonable replacement with?

Renault Megane. It needs a new bonnet - not an old one from a breakers yard. A year ago someone hit it in the side and it needed a new door panel which cost £800, which is what makes me think this repair is going to cost a lot of money.

2002 - just under 60,000 miles. I should also add that this is likely to be an insurance claim against the person who hit it - they have owned up and are taking full responsibility. What my concern is is what happens if it gets written off.

A new bonnet, if that's all that's needed, shouldn't cause this car to be written off.

However, if it is, because maybe some other expensive part is also needed, you will be given the market value of the car.

Sometimes an insurance company will offer you a lower amount if you want to keep the car. This can be a good idea, because with a bit of research you can probably get it repaired a lot more cheaply that the insurance company can through its authorised repairers. For example by using second-hand parts.

Just make sure you really know how much it's going to cost to repair before accepting such a deal.

If all it needs is a new bonnet, I wouldn't worry. Even at a main dealer it'll only cost £4-500 to fit and spray to match the car's colour.
In the UK, most insurance companies will only write off a car if the repair cost is 50% of the vehicle's trade value, so your Megane should be OK to get fixed.

Your right, there is a good chance your car will be written off. Your probably not far off the money with your estimate of your cars worth. You will be able to buy it back off the insurance company if its written off at approx 10 % of what they pay out.eg £250.

It will then need to attend a VIC at local vosa station test after you repair it before you can apply for your log book back.

Well worth doing as you will have a £2k+ car for under a grand.

If it runs and drives it will not cost that much to get the body work hammered out and replaced. If the car drove crooked and the air bags came out that would be much more costly to repair. Year make model and actual milage would be helpfull.
