When answering another question on Y!A about languages, it dawned on me that if ASL were used in other countries that it could be a universal language. Is it used elsewhere?

Most countries have their own sign language. Deaf people around the world don't all speak the same sign language.

ASL is spoken in the US and parts of Canada and Mexico. It's also sometimes used in other countries, but usually alongside the local sign language.

There is BSL (British sign language), LSF (French Sign language), NGT (Dutch sign language), ISL (Irish Sign Language) , LSQ (Quebec Sign language), DGS (German Sign language) and many others in addition to ASL.

There are similarities and vast differences. So a person who signs in one language might be able to get by in another.

The person who answered before me is correct. I asked my SO who is an ASL interperter and she agreed that it is like our own language, there for other countries have thier own use of sign languge and some people are bi lingual and understand both.
