You should never have to replace the turbocharger if you have serviced the vehicle properly. A turbocharger replacement is very expensive, usually around $2000 to $3500.

Some old Volvos had a turbo upgrade to water cooled turbos back in 1985 or so. Turbos can be remanufactured or rebuilt. Please get the engine checked out mechanically and exhaust system checked before spending about 3,000 on such an old car.

never as long as vehicle is maintained to repair no way just get a replacement turbocharger and good luck
