The Cylinders are the heart of any engine. They are inside the Cylinder Head and are simple hollow tubes in which the pistons travel . They are usually virtically arranged in a row on top of the engine but can be in two rows making a 'V' configuration, can be horrizontally opposed as on VW Beetle or Porsche or even as a as Rotary in which case the 'cylinder' is circular.
If the cylinders are 'worn' the engine is 'worn' and the engine will have other damage as a result.

The most-often talked about cylinders are inside the engine - this is where the fuel is mixed with air and burnt to provide power. See http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine2.htm

However, there are many other cylinders (not all present in all cars) such as the master and slave cylinders for the clutch (the master is just behind the pedal, in the engine compartment, the slave is on the clutch housing, between the engine and gearbox), brake master cylinder, and brake wheel cylinders.

they are called the "pistons" as well the more cylinders an engine has, the bigger the engine. they usually come in even numbers but BMW and Audi have some cars that come whit 5 cylinders. a v8 engine comes with 8 cylinders, v6 or 6 in line means it's a 6 cylinders engine, etc. and they are located in the engine, and that is where the combustion takes place.

the cylinders are located inside the engine block,
basically in the bottom is a sump which holds the oil for lubrication, the cranshaft rotates which pushes the pistons up and down inside a chamber called the cylinders.
go to google images type in internal cumbustion engines you will find lots of diagrams.

Be more specific.

Under the hood, between the crankshaft and the camshaft/valve train, enclosing the bore of each piston, for the entire length of its stroke.
Other, less popular cylinders are in your car's ignition and keylocks, brakes, hydraulic actuators, shocks, transmission,etc.,etc.
