I am intending to buy a laptop with an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core processor with a speed of 1.7GHZ. Is this processor better or worse than the Intel range of processors as you get more RAM and a faster processor speed on a laptop with AMD Athlon than you can with Intel for the same price?

It's not true, AMD is using outdated technology. Intel Core 2 Duo is way better and worth the price. Ghz is not really everything, you have to look into the L1 cache and the L2 cache. AMD uses the outdated technology to boost up the Level 1 Cache. Intel's Core 2 Duo greatly surpasses this. Which is why it is slightly a little bit more costly.

The AMD processor is worse than Intel's processors.

You can get more RAM but it wouldn't surprise me if an Intel processor with a lower clock speed can equal it in performance (especially a Core 2 Duo although I doubt you're actually comparing to a Core 2 Duo or even a Core Duo).

The Athlon in laptops also tend to run rather hot

If the speed of amd and Intel processor are equal and both laptops have same price go for Intel one but don't go for Intel if other hardware's of amd laptop like ram,VGA and others are higher.

DIFFERENCE between processor's are Ghz and catch like:
2MB catch 4 MB catch 1.7ghz 2.00 ghz, between amd and inter difference is price (amd is cheaper) but Intel always is one step ahead from amd, there is no problem with amd products also.

You workstation utilization does not require a very good end computer. one element you probably did no longer point out is your point of workstation information. Given the purposes you have expressed, and putting in strategies ease of use, i might propose an Apple MacBook or MacBook professional counting on your budget. i'm particular you additionally can get an older Mac at a useful cost. the entire thing approximately use and setup make it commendable for a student. And the styling actual is extreme-high quality. although i could desire to alert you, some video games have basically computer variations, and if that's an overriding element then decide for a Pentium series computer. regardless of you do decide for, upload RAM. maximum manufacturers put in inadequate RAM. i might recomend you have a minimum of IGB or RAM.
