In America, they ARE called vanity plates. But I guess you already knew that, or you wouldn't have asked the question, would you?

Because they are unique. They fall outside the normal number plate system, and you can buy and sell a number plate. So lots of people choose something personal to them (HRH1 for Prince Charles :) As I understand it, those vanity plates in the US don't have to be unique and can only be placed on the front of the car?

They're vanity plates for people who are missing the point. How can anybody tell if you are wealthy enough to buy a new car every six months or a year if you have a personal plate.

Some don't want you to know thier car is 6years old, so personal plates works for that.
Your right though Vanity plates are appropriate.

Imagine trying to sell a car with JOHN plates to someone called FRED

Because they are transferred from old car to new car each time, therefore they become personal to the person, not the car!

and yes, I agree - vanity plates to a degree!! (hubby has one!)

I have seen personal number plates on cars that are probably cheaper than the plates themselves. Dont be fooled, alot of the time it's because someone is insecure and needs attention. ;)

It's still just a number plate. I suppose it is helpful for the ones who keep forgetting what make their car is, you know, 'JAG' on a Jaguar, 'X5' on a BMW X5. Sad really I suppose. It's like buying a Rolex watch, still only tells the time and no more accurately then a £5 watch from Argos, but it's all about swank.

It's not always vanity.
I have a cherished plate but bought it as an investment many years ago and it has tripled in value in that time.
