Only use 1 antivirus program and 1 firewall on your computer.
There are many free antivirus programs you can install.
BitDefender, Avast, ClamWin and Comodo are some free programs.

What do you mean by "more up to date?"
If you have a paid version of PC Tools that has expired and is no longer updating, it is totally useless! Otherwise either configure it to update automatically or update it manually yourself.
Now to your question... it is OK to have more than one antivirus installed, but only one can be configured as your *real-time* resident antivirus; you can have another configured to be an on-demand virus scanner only that doesn't give full time protection.
For example you can install Avast and use it as your real-time antivirus, and deactivate the real-time protection of the PC Tools AV and use it as an on-demand only scanner (if it updates... if it doesn't update, axe the PC Tools entirely.)

If you have 2 antiviruses your coputer will be very slow and they will both display a message if you are running another antivirus please disable it now, or something like that.
what i reccomend
If its a computer that needs to be kept secure have 1 antivirus and use windows firewall.
If its a computer that needs speed and performance for games etc. then have no antivirus but have windows security settings on high and every week or so, go to
safety.live.com
then go to safety scanner and have a free online fix, the safety scanner connects to your computer so you dont have to download anything it is owned by microsoft, and will clean your computer of viruses, malware, spyware and it will also clean your registry

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. CCleaner also fixes your registry. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware.
You can download cleaner for free here http://bit.ly/1kGZmoH

Although you still can do that,,,,but,, you will find most antivirus do not allow the presence of another one,,however,,after many trial and errors I found that AVG 7.5 free edition can be installed with Bitdefender 8.0 free edition and work together at same time,,,the advantage here is that the resident shield of AVG in its free edition is always active but this one in Bitdefender free edition is active only in the professional one,,so NO much memory will be consumed and you can work with Bitdefender manually only

It is bad to have two anti-virus to be invoked in the same pc and at the same time.
Anti-virus is also a software. There are bugs. Two antivirus may attack each other. Then, you would got false alarm.
Or they may hang-up the other, then virus can take the chance to get in.

Whatever antivirus you install, you need to check the settings to regulate what you are scanning and how you are scanning. For example, some scanners scan all drives in one go and scan inside archives eg .zip files - this can take ages.

you probably did not ask what the proper loose antivirus application is. I surely have tried Kaspersky, NOD32, Zone Alarm internet protection, Panda, Avast professional, AVG professional. avast loose, avgfree and extra, on the proper i got here around the proper for my computing gadget. i'm utilising type Micro internet protection 2008 professional. have not had a mission on condition that installation it. it truly is evidently a question no individual can truly answer, because all of us has his or her selections

only use one anti virus at a time or they will conflict and wont work properly, make sure you have a firewall and if your antivirus doesnt cover spyware/adware/malware etc get something that will scan for these also, e.g: spybot or AVG anti spyware (free) AVG also have a free antivirus too.
