I use this style of forum as a means of realigning my thinking. I also use it with my students who I know give advise on this site.
I am total amazed as to what people select as the best (correct) answer, when even asking serious questions.
It is also very interesting in evaluating how people perceive what is the right answer when asking for what appears to be sometimes a very serious question.
Its like looking for the spelling of a word in the dictionary; if you do not know how to spell the word, where do you start to make your selection? (analogy)
The difference that we as professionals have compared to non professionals is that our mistakes have a greater impact, when we get it wrong; and we all get it wrong sometime. The main point is that as professionals we normally spot the mistakes quite early.
The only person, who I heard of, who never made a mistake, ended up nailed to a cross.
Everybody leans something from this site (I know I do). I even use it to relax (strange I hear you say), I enjoy peoples questions and even more so the answers; other that the puerile rude and offensive comments that sometime evade the site. it just goes to show how individual and unique we are.
I am marking all day (150 essays on metabolism), at present and I take a break during marking, sometimes to answer questions, like now, or just to gather information.
I have a notice on my office door which says " Everybody brings happiness to this office. some when they enter and some when they leave."
Its a bit like this site; we all bring some knowledge, or we take away that self same knowledge and possible become a better person for it.

This site can be a very rewarding experience for both the asker and respondent. I'm a professional, insomniac and a computer addict. I love to share my knowledge and experience. In the same token, I learn a lot.. It 's never too old to learn or pick up new tricks.
What irks me the most, that some askers don't bother to choose the best answer. If they are not interested in finding out the answer; why bother to ask it in the first place?
Then, there are the trolls who goes around and give bad rating. My answer is well researched.and supported by facts.
There's a plethora of infomation available here. The best come from life experiences. While others are textbook oriented. I'm very selective in questions to answer. I like legitimate; honest and interesting questions. Not the silly, moronic ones. And to add insult to injury, the asker sometimes chooses the most ridiculous answerer.; based on humor, or irrelevant facts. Horrendous!

I'm not a professional, but I think there is too much info and conflicting info to really develop a sense of enlightenment. The doctors will continue to make mistakes no matter how much they learn. With more education only means they will be making more informed mistakes. But, how can you expect someone to think of all the right answers all the time?

I both learn things, and practice utilizing my knowledge. I jump around from category to category in the health section to answer people's questions not only because I like informing people, but because it lets me stretch my mind, and remember all parts of medicine, and not just phsychology. I've actually become more interested in neurology because of this. Its a fun way for me to pass time.

I'm sure my local medical centre health care professionals are far too exhausted from their 4-day week to even look. Do I sound disillusioned?

I agree with the AEMT, mostly you do get to pick on people (which was quite funny by the way). Additionally, you get to critcize other medical professionals when they say things wrong, particularly students you try to get on here and flash their skill set which is even more fun in my opinion than picking on an uninformed public.

Do you really think that any serious-minded medical professional even contemplates wasting their time on this site??
