"Winter" hasn't officially started here in the east coast, but the temperatures have dropped and nighttime temperatures are no longer autumn-like.
Here in the lower Hudson valley, most nights are now below freezing (its 28 degrees F here right now).
Most ski-resorts in the north east just opened this weekend for the season. It is already cold enough for them to make snow on a consistent basis.

what would make you think winter would start on a coast (specifically the east coast). its a meteorological date according to distance and tilt of the earth from the sun. You need to study not only weather in school but also grammar by the way you worded this question

NO winter begins for the North American continent on Dec. 21 no matter what part of the continent or country you live in. The weather may be cold before that but Winter begins on Dec. 21
