The difference between conservatives and liberals is that liberals believe that compassion should be mandated by government fiat. Conservatives believe in voluntary charity, and they act on it, conservatives give more to charity both as an absolute value and as a percentage of income.
This conservative would reject the disingenuous remark about "capitalism run amok." Capitalism is the only moral system, the voluntary trading of value for value. Those who are incompetent either become competent or they rely on voluntary charity, a voluntary charity that would become more prevalent if government interference in the economy were reduced or eliminated altogether.

I would try to make sure everyone in the country had a means of being fed, and have one vehicle or another to better themselves and their lives. Hey, I am a Christian and a middle of the road guy in regard to government and politics.
