You have asked a wonderful question. You list fine examples of ethical business behavior that could also be called examples of social responsibility in business.

Meanwhile a whole new category of business function has emerged called Corporate Social Responsibility that in some cases is managed by, get this, a Chief Responsibility Officer or CRO! In many cases this is a new name for corporate philanthropy or "good works" and avoids recognizing that corporate responsibility should be exercised by everyone in the corporation with respect to any person or group of people who have a stake in the corporation, including in the ways you identify.

The stake holders of a business include: employees, customers, suppliers, investors, government and the (local) community, i.e. the society. I would define social responsibility in business as the acceptance by all those involved of accountability to all stake holders for the performance of the business. I haven't seen a graphic portraying this but this definition may suggest one to you.

I'm confused by your examples (paying taxes? selling products?) because usually the term "corporate social responsibility" refers to an organization's community relations - how it 'gives back' in to the communities in which it operates.

For example, think of McDonald's Ronald McDonald House charities, which has provided more than $400 million in grants and program services to causes worldwide that benefit children, not the quality of their burgers or that they pay taxes.

Many companies effect corporate social responsibility policies do this by providing funding for specific areas of need in general or specifically in the communities in which they operate.

If you go to any major organization website, like McDonalds, for example, you can find the link describing their CSR policy, and links to their programs for more iformation.
