before they have to be on the 40-man roster, and they either become minor league free agents, or they are able to be picked up in the rule V draft? any links and any personal info would be helpful.

MLB rules regarding what teams can do with players and what options players have are rather detailed. Wikipedia has a great link (below) that outlines the different options open to both teams and players.

Much of what a team can do with a player and when is determined by the contract that a player has when signed.

As long as they want to, and they can always trade them, before they even make thier major League debut. One case, the Chicago Cubs drafted Jon Garland, and he was in thier minor league system for almsot a year, and then they traded him to the Chicago White Sox, and they just didn't give up on him, and he came to the Major Leagues with them, and now this past off season, he has been traded to the Los Angeles Angles.

A team can have a player as long as they want unless the player dose not want to be on that team or,the player could retire.
