seriously,
some would say understanding aerodynamics and its structure got us into "atmospheric travel" and then into "space travel",
BUT
we figured out "space travel" because of our understanding of physics offered by newton and gravity (aka escape velocity), and our understanding of chemistry for our fuels and metals.
plus funding from governments,
