I mean we pay into Social Security expecting when we get old enough we can relax and not have to work. But now its not going to be there so why do we have to pay for something we wont get.

I been doing reasearch on the social security benefits(gov) website and looking at the stats there isnt going to be any money in the account for my generation when we retire. They have solutions on the site to fix the problem but no action has been taken.

You know J I honestly think the gov will find a way to some how give ss more funding just like they do for wars .But I think that it is wrong we wont get any while we get taxed for the rest of our lives for it.I mean we do work hard for or money which the government takes and uses for all kind of B.S, but I think are country as a whole should be mad about what our tax dollars are used for, if the gov can afford to spend billions a year on a war then why is there so many other funds that cant get a million. Are whole system is wrong as far as taxes and governmet spending goes and if we want it to change then us citizens will have to come togather to make a real effort on changing it.

Exactly.

Benefits aren't guaranteed to anyone, never have been. The courts have made this rather clear.

How it survived this long I have no idea. Just as puzzling, if not moreso, is the fact that 'the people' allowed such a system to be created in the first place. Its creation was a gross abuse of "The Welfare Clause." But it is just like most .gov programs, self perpetuating, frequently abused, etc., etc.

I'd like to see, at the very least, an opt-out provision. Social Security is not required, yet it in all practicality everyone is forced/coerced into participating (now at birth before one even has a chance to willingly decide whether to participate or not) and once that happens there is no way out (like the Hotel California).
I'm actually surprised more people aren't up in arms about SS, especially with how rampant identity theft is, the fact that SSN's have been abused and requested by all kinds of entities, and seeing that SSN's are not reliable identifiers (the cards state specifically that they are not to be used for identification, but somehow people, companies, government agencies still think they are useful to verify ID).

SS long ago outlived it's usefulness, if it ever had any. People need to be responsible for their own retirement and remember that the government was not and is not designed to, nor should it, take care of the people in such a way.

I think that the next courageous politician (aside from being the first) will be the one that says, "Social Security has failed. We can't continue it so we won't. We do have an obligation to those to whom it has been promised and have not the time left to make other arrangements, so we will be phasing it out."

I'd be willing to continue paying in to meet that obligation under those circumstances, but since I know it's going to fail, I'm not happy with paying into a known train wreck. Aside from that, I've got my retirement planning in hand. So I don't worry about it much.

Wow. Bunch of folks don't know how it works.

You have no "account." It's going to fail even if everyone keeps paying in. The President can't touch Social Security money only Congress, and the war is not so expensive (less than 2% of GDP anually) as to need to be funded that way.

"I think I'd rather face a terrorist than deal with my government"....as former Gov. Jesse Ventura quoted. I can believe it when this is how our gov. does its own people.

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" This message must have meant something to those seeking refuge and freedom here in the past. Does that mean that this message on the Statue of Liberty is a lie?? Do we really have the freedom??

When they raise our taxes on things like food, gas, etc. then they should raise the earning for those that work so it balances out. I guess it wouldn't hurt to go back to stuffing our mattresses to save some money for the future. I wouldn't be surprised if our government sold their people for slavery.

Well, for all u slick willy haters out there, he had social security shored up fine when he left office. The dumbass bushy boy came along and wanted mountains of money for his war against the "weapons of mass distruction!" going on a trillion so far? or so? And don't give this "privitisation crap" that won't fix things. Social security was enacted in order to "suppliment" your allready existing retirment savings in the beginning and now it has become a HUGE buerocracy that pays out claims to gobs of people that never paid a dime into it. Don't worry too much though, there will be a full blown revolution if they quit paying, they know they have to pay that back somehow come hell or high water, you will get your check.

I'm kind of upset, especially since I put alot of money into the system, only to not get it in the 30-35 years when I retire. Luckily my investments are going really well for me, that I shouldnt need it when I retire.

If you think the government is there to allow you to kick back and relax, then you need to wake up. SS is there to supplement your own personal retirement, not take care of all your needs. Make your own plans for retirement. Save, invest, pay for your home. That way whatever SS monies are available to you will be additions to your financial income, not your only choice.

Who said it's not going to be there?
It will as long as you pay into your account you have SS.
The people that say it will be gone are exaggerating the situation, it would be more likely that your SS payments will increase rather than disappear, you see what you don't realize is that SS is an account that acrues each and every time you get a pay check, no one can take that away, it's the same as a bank account only managed through the Fed. as long as you are paying in you will get that money back!

just another example of the government taking our money & yet we still cant do anything about it unless we all stick together. other then that you should also do some research on us having to be taxed, because there isnt even a law stating that you have to pay it yet if you dont you will be arrested

And no action will be taken either unless it's one that serves government interests.

It's all a part of their greed to consume more power and rule over the common citizen.

All that matters to them is money and power. Our lives mean nothing to them.
