look at the bottom right of your internet window for a lock...if it's closed you're safe, if it's open, don't use your info there...if there is no lock, go somewhere else

If your computer is infected with spyware, it's possible. When you fill out purchase forms on the net, some spyware/trojans/keyloggers/rootkits etc, etc.. will log and/or send the information to a remote server/email address.

Beside spyware in your computer, phishing program may be implanted in the web-site or you may be hijacked to a fake web-site
You should have a full internet security suite which includes anti-spyware and anti-phishing.

Online purchasing is very safe provided the website uses secure protocols. but thats only from their side, remember there is always a possibility that your computer might be infected with viruses in which case every key stroke you make might be recorded and sent to strangers on the internet.
online purchasing, or credit in general will never be completely safe
