These two cars are NOT generally of the type to be compared on the basis of costs or fuel economy. The general statement "If you have to ask, you probably can't afford it" applys here.

Leaving out the cost/fuel economy statements, I would give the Lexus the heads up as being a more refined vehicle. BMW's are pure HP road machines. A Lexus is more refined and better received in the circle of friends I run with.

It has been proven and still in effect that german cars outlast any american car im not suprised it does better then lexus i own a 3 series and i cant be any happier, if you looking for a car that has hp and will last i would go for bmw if ur into grandma looking vehicles that all they focus on is how smoth their suspension is i would buy a lexus either way ur still gonna get a good car.

The Lexus is cheaper to own with insurance and maintemance costs.
The IS has a smoother and quieter ride, which makes the BMW slightly more fun to drive fast.
Since the BMW is German, the maintemance and insurance costs are very expensive.

the lexus cost's less initially, and repair costs as well as service costs both remain low. the time allotments for service are reasonable for both the owner and the mechanic and they are fun to work on as well as drive. the techno gadgets will remain working for the life of the car as do the seats and trim and THEY DON'T LEAK OIL.
bmw's with their cheap string type window regulators that fail every rain or snow storm,
finicky engine management problems and stupid electronic controls and oh yes my pet peeve OIL LEAKS, even hyundai and kia power-trains stay dry.[this is the 2008 model year, cars have been made in germany for over 100 years and all have a syphilliptic drip under there in at least 2 spots]

i hear BMW's aren't very good cars.

although i love the body.

my friend has a 5 series, white, but it's not a 745!

anyway...

i think you should shop around, you may like a model you wouldn't consider, say maybe an audi or infniti! depending on the city, the cost varies.

can't go wrong with a lexus if u have to choose.

Drive both, buy the one you prefer. Both good cars. The Lexus may be cheaper to service, but often parts for Lexus are as expensive as the German brands.

When in doubt, go with the Japanese.

I've had Toyota (Lexus), and Honda and Acura (same co.) and those are the 3 best cars I've owned. I've also owned Mercedes which I wasn't wild about, and some American cars I'd rather not talk about.

Beemers are nice, but when in doubt, go with the Japanese.

GL!
