it really depends on the changing dynamics between the communist party and growing middle class in China. the people have been exposed to western culture, and they like it. this trend, all things being equal, would imply an smooth transition from growing power to a collaborative relationship with the U.S. as a peer.

however, the com. party in China may want to hold the mantle of being #1, and thus may encourage their people, through various state controlled means, that the west is a threat of some sort and enflame dormant nationalism in the people, encouraging a more aggresive stance towards the west (read:U.S.).

With the wealth and influence of the middle class growing, the may voice a desire for more control in politics, changing the future of China.
