both are reliable.. but you never know what's gonna happen so backing up your stuff or keeping it somewhere safe (such as a flash drive) is a GOOD idea.

Flash drives are very reliable. Since they have no moving parts (hence their alternate names of "solid state storage"), they have far less greater chances of failing/crashing.
Flash drives are getting cheaper every day, but a 2 gigabyte drive (which is what you will need) will still run you about $40-50.
The larger capacity flash drives (eg 250 GB) can run you about $140-160.
You probably don't need to know this but, make sure if you ever have to format the drive that you use FAT32, and not NTFS. NTFS is recommended for larger drives, not the small portable thumb ones.

if it is only one GB of data then the flash drive is better hands down, hard drives have mechanical parts that wear out and cannot be safely moved around, flash drives may have a limit on the times you can read/write from them but i have yet to see one that wore out, and i had the same flash sticks for 3 years now that are in frequent use

Well, it's best to always have two copies of your data. That way, in case something happens to one, you have the other. This applies only to personal files (probably eveyrhting in your "My Documents" folder, as programs can be restored.off of the install discs / internet.
The flash drives should be, ive never experienced any problems. Like I said above, if yiou want them off your computer, make two copies first.

Flash drives are more resistant to impact shock, but hard drives are more resistant to rewrites (if you rewrite a flash memory location 10,000 times or so, that location dies).
Your best best is to have THREE backups. That way, at least one will survive.
And remember to take the possibility of fire, theft or lightning into account. (Lightning will FRY anything it comes into contact with, even if it has a surge suppressor on it).
