If you need to transfer information between home and work then flash drives are to best option. They are small and are getting cheaper per Gbyte all the time. Remember that they are not indestructible; because they stick out from the USB socket they can be easily caught on things and can cause damage to both the flash drive and the USB socket. Also because they are so small they can be lost. Backing up the info stored on them is recommended.
If you just want to increase the storage capacity of you home pc then an easy non-technical option is an external hard drive. As with flash drives the price is coming down and the capacity is going up.
External hard drives are also a good option for creating image backups of pc hard drives which become invaluable when you pc hard drive fails.
If you have more than one pc at home (including Laptops) the external drive can be used to provide backup options for each one. This can be done by physically moving the drive from one pc to another or it can be done over your home network, but obviously the pc with the external drive has to be connected to the network and file/drive sharing is enabled. There are also network drives which operate independently of a pc but they are a bit more expensive.
Basically, if you want mobility then choose Flash Drives, if you want extra storage then choose Hard Drive and when you fill that, add another.
But with the falling prices why not have both flash and hard drives and have all your options covered.

flash drive are practically immune to falling and are very reliable for data back ups, their cost per GB is much much bigger though, their main draw back is that there is a limit of the times you can read/write from them after which they will stop functioning properly but, ive never seen it happen
hard drives however are much cheaper compared and have larger capacities up to 2 tarabyte for the average consumer, they have moving mechanical parts so they wear after some time especially if they are not kept in optimal conditions are are turned on off frequently, they WILL be destroyed after a fall and are very unreliable for back ups
all the external usb/firewire/lan drives are the same as your typical harddrive but they are even less reliable because the case they are in is very different from the computer case enviorment, much smaller and much hotter with less air ventilation, so the drive might fail (and ive seen it happen) even after two weeks
in my opinion, flash sticks are the best for backuping data, but not on a daily basis, they are good for photos and important documents or anything that does not require updating
external usb drives are good if they are custom made with aluminum cases with good cooling, dont ever ever get those ready made drives as they suck really bad, remember to use them strictly for backups and turn them off when youre done as the cases do not make an ideal place to keep a working hard drive

Flash drives are incredibly easy to use, mobile and robust. Perfect for transporting small amounts of data between computers.
On the downside they are relatively slow, small and expensive. A hard drive is cheaper and quicker for increasing your storage space, but hardly practical for carrying around.

Price, hard is cheaper
Point of Failure, electrical for flash and mechanical for hard
Speed, for absolutely I do not know it too
Transportability, flash is much easier to move around.

Flash drives are faster than hard drive, but $/gig are expensive. I'm told you can even install Vista on them and boot from them. (I'm also told this won't work for XP)

Flash is faster, smaller and doesnt have moving parts( meaning it is less likely to fail)
Harddrives have much larger capacity and are usually cheaper...considering how much space you get for the dollar

memory and disk area are in keeping with threat the main broadly-at a loss for words words interior the computing international. to truly understand how your laptop works, you could desire to first understand what memory and disk area are. The stressful disk, frequently talked approximately because of the fact the "stressful force," that's actual the mechanism that holds the stressful disk, is a spindle of magnetic discs that would carry various gigabytes of documents. subsequently, disk area refers to how lots area you have accessible on your stressful disk for storing records. once you maintain a checklist or installation a clean software, it gets saved on your stressful disk. The extra records you get carry of, installation, or save on your stressful disk, the extra finished it relatively is going to become. memory, on the different hand isn't comparable to disk area! memory refers back to the random get right of entry to memory (RAM) interior your laptop. those are small chips that carry various memory modules facet by potential of facet. Your laptop makes use of memory (RAM) to save actively working courses on the laptop, such as the working device. case in point, the working device's interface and different strategies get loaded into memory while the laptop boots up. once you open a software like Microsoft be conscious, it gets loaded into the laptop's memory besides. once you supply up this methodology, the memory area is freed up for different courses. RAM could be accessed various hundred circumstances swifter than a stressful force, that's why energetic courses might desire to be loaded into the RAM from the stressful force. because of the fact maximum documents on the stressful disk does not might desire to get loaded into the device memory at one time, computers frequently have lots extra stressful disk area than memory. case in point, a working laptop or laptop might incorporate a 200 GB stressful force, and in easy terms a million GB of RAM. So in case your laptop tells you which you haven't any longer have been given adequate room to place in a software, you will want delete records out of your stressful disk which you do no longer want or purchase an extra stressful force. in case your laptop says there's no longer adequate memory to run a undeniable software, you will might desire to enhance your memory by potential of procuring for extra RAM. understanding the version between those 2 styles of hardware can save you useful time and funds. desire this helps
