PRICE
First of all... the price... I am so sick of idiots saying how the PS3 is too expensive. Unless you're some kid who's not got a job, $600 ain't too much. Even with a part time job it would take less than a year's worth of savings.
And it's worth it. Look at it this way; the PS3 can act as a living room PC, having a 60GB hard drive, wired of Wi-Fi connections and a free internet browser, whereas on 360 you have to pay a yearly fee for Live. So, you can keep music and movies on the 60GB internal HDD, an external USB HDD, or on another computer and play it back thru Wi-Fi. And no doubt there will soon be aftermarket ways to use it as a video recorder and/or play .exe games on it.
Also, you can use it as a next-gen Blu-ray player, especially since the quality is as good as standalones and the PS3 costs far less than standalones. Whereas the 360 charges $199 for a HD DVD player and can't even use HDMI.
So the PS3 is, in reality a Blu-Ray player ($699), a HD Media Centre Living Room PC ($999) and a games console better than the 360 or Wii hardware-wise
($599). Which means the PS3 is $2097 worth of value in a $599 bundle
Now if that hasn't convinced you here's a price list for costs over 5 years, trying to make the consoles as even as possible.
PS3 list:
$599.99 for Console
$49.99 for Extra Controller
$9.99 for HDMI Cable (you can use any generic one)
$24.99 for Motorola HS820 Bluetooth Headset (for internet play)
$14.99 for Memory Stick adapter (for old PS2 and PS games)
$1200 for 20 games (over 5 years)
TOTAL: $1899.95
360 list:
$399.99 for Console
$199.99 for HD-DVD Drive (next-gen use)
$19.99 for Intercooler (needed to solve cooling problems)
$19.99 for Charge and Play Kit
$47.99 for Extra Controller
$49.99 for 40GB External HDD (to bring HDD size up to the same as the PS3's)
$249.95 for a 5 year subscription to LIVE (PS3 has all the features for FREE)
$1200 for 20 games (over 5 years)
TOTAL: $2187.89
PS3 is CHEAPER for the full package over 5 years. Also, since the 360 games are on DVD as of now, they cannot have anywhere near the sound and graphics quality of PS3 games. Maybe later on the 360 games will be HD-DVD but, untill then, PS3 has higher quality games.
And also, since Blu-ray prices are predicted to drop considerably faster than HD-DVD, in a few years the PS3 itself would be the same price, if not cheaper, than the 360; not to mention the games would be around the same price as 360 games on DVD and probably cheaper than any possible future HD-DVD games.
Other components whose prices would drop faster on the PS3 than the 360 would be the Cell processor, the dual-channel RAM and the advanced GPU, making the PS3 cheaper than the 360 outright in as little as a year.
In conclusion, PS3 is cheaper overall, especially if you wait 1 or 2 years. Of course the Wii is cheaper than both but is not in the same league as the 360 and PS3 hardware-wise.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
GAMES
Games on the 360 are dominated by First Person Shooters, and if you're an RPG lover you'll be sorely dissapointed, Oblivion being the only RPG on 360, while the PS3, for now, is focusing on mainly sport and RPG's, but will soon have more FPS.
In conclusion, hardcore fps fans would prefer 360, most other gamers, serious or casual, would prefer the PS3.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Media Capabilities
With a Blu-Ray player and a larger HDD built-in the PS3 is dominant here. The 360 is more for full-on hardcore gamers, Wii is for full-on casual gaming. The PS3 manages to mix both of those AND add decent media centre features. Only thing lacking is the ability to record video, and I'm sure either Sony, a 3rd party or a black market company will come up with a way to do that. The ONLY media centre feature on the 360 is the Windows Media Centre extenders, which cost extra (I'm pretty sure)
PS3 wins this one hands down
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
GAMING
There are very few areas where the 360 beats the PS3, and the games lineup is one of them. Currently the 360 has a FAR better lineup than the PS3 in terms of serious gaming, and the Wii beating the PS3 in casual gaming. Currently, the only gamers attracted to the PS3 lineup are RPG lovers, especially since the Final Fantasy series is only on PS3. But you have to remember the 360 had a big head start and the Wii is devoloped solely for casual gaming. I was surprised the Wii wasn't released with a Pokemon RPG, considering the success of the series.
The 360 wins this one, albeit with a head start
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
HD CONTENT
Blu-Ray games. Need I say more? The 360 has a chance of upgrading to HD DVD games later on and the Wii has no HD option whatsoever.
PS3 wins
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY
The Wii wins this one, supposedly being backwards compatible with all Nintendos, even the NES. How cartridges work with the DVD based system of the Wii is beyond me, however.
PS3 comes second, being compatible with all PS2 and PS1 games in the U.S and Japan, with most PS2 and all PS1 games in Europe and the Asia Pacific.
The 360 comes last here, only working with select Xbox games, each one having a seperate way of working.
Wii wins this round, closely being followed by the PS3
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
PORTABLE DEVICES COMPATIBILITY
I'm not actually sure about this one, the Wii and PS3 are very close here.
The Wii's compatibility is unknown to me. I don't see how it could work with any Gameboy other than the original GBA and the Wireless Adapter or wired connections with the GBA GB Micro and GBA SP. With the DS, however, there are a few ways. The original DS could use it's peer-to-peer wireless networking and the new DS Lite could use it's Wi-Fi connection.
The PSP can be used as an extra screen, an extra controller or a remote control with the PS3, which gives an unprecedented level of compatibility.
The 360 has no such portable console as of yet, but the Zune has limited connectivity with the 360
PS3 wins this one by a hair.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
COMPATIBILITY WITH 3RD PARTY PRODUCTS
The PS3 is compatible with external HDD's, Bluetooth or USB headsets, Wired or Wireless Bluetooth and USB Keyboards and Mice when the drivers are created and installed and 3rd party controllers are in the making. And bluetooth and IR remotes should work with the right drivers.
The 360 is only compatible with Microsoft certified keyboards, mice and headsets but 3rd party controllers are in the making.
Wii compatibility is unknown as of yet.
PS3 wins this easily.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
MULTIPLAYER
In wireless multiplayer PS3 and 360 are roughly the same but PS3 wins because it's multiplayer is free.
In physical multiplayer the Wii is the best for family fun and parties, the PS3 and 360 are equal for serious gaming.
So it really depends on the type of multiplayer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
FUN FACTOR
CASUAL GAMING:
Wii wins this hands down. The games on the Wii are fun and watching someone play with the Wii controller is hilarious.
FOR A BIT OF EVERYTHING:
THis is the type that generally sells the most overall and Sony has always dominated this and will continue to do so with the PS3
SERIOUS GAMING:
360, followed closely by the PS3. The Wii has no place in this.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
APPEAL
The first people to buy a console in general are lovers of a particular series only on that console, younger children and rabid fanboys. The Wii has all three aplently, which is why it sold out fast. The Wii mainly appeals to families and children ages 12 and under, not to mention Pokemon and Mario lovers and ultracasual gamers.
The 360 appeals to hardcore gamers, generally 16 and over, and has games that cater to those people.
The PS3 applies to practically everyone, with Eye Toy, Buzz and Guitar Hero being the best friend od parties and families, not to mention little kids; RPGs and lighter shooters for the casual gamer and full-on first person shooters for the hardcore gamer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
HARDWARE
The PS3 trumps this, with it's advance dual-channel ram, high-end Nvidia HD GPU and ultramodern Cell proccessor, not to mention it's Blu-Ray drive and 7.1HD sound card
Xbox 360 comes in second, with good RAM and high-end HD ATI GPU with an okay CPU and sound card.
The Wii comes in a pathetic 3rd here, with terrible graphics, worse than the PS2 and Xbox, a weak proccessor and slow RAM. Not to mention the fact the graphics and 5.1 surround are both standard definition.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
GRAPHICS AND SOUND
The PS3 wins this, with an excellent Nvidia GPU capable of producing 1080p out of the box and High Definition 7.1 surround.
THe 360 comes second here, with rival company ATI's response to the PS3 GPU, only slightly worse and a decent 7.1 surround card which, sadly, is not used to it's full power in games.
As said before, the Wii is terrible in this regard, with graphics worse than the PS2 and 3d rarely used well in 1st party games. The sound card isn't that great either, providing standard definition 5.1 surround.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
OTHER FACTORS
The 360's lack of 1080p and HD DVD out of the box are very noticable, as is the inability to use HDMI. Paying a subscription for online play is a bad idea too, especially as both the PS3 and Wii offer it for free.
The only bad things about the PS3 is the lack of Component or HDMI out of the box, lack of units in stock at the beginning, high start-off price, the fact they have yet to implement a Platinum system, small games lineup and lack of Blu-Ray movies so far, not to mention the fact it is a fingerprint magnet. Pluses are it has the best design (in my opinion), a flash memory card reader not limited to Sony's own Memory Stick family and free online services rivalling that of Xbox Live Gold. Not to mention the well implemented compatibility with the PSP that has a huge potential.
The Wii's lack of any High-Definition content whatsoever, bad games lineup for all but the most casual gamer and terrible graphics and sound quality games are big minuses. The lack of a user accessible HDD isn't a good move either. A big plus is the low cost and sole rights to many of the games series that appeal to young games such as Pokemon, Mario and Zelda. I cannot, however, see a serious gamer using a Wii as their main console.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
CONCLUSION
I think that in 3-5 years the PS3 will be the main console, with the 360 still an option for serious gamers and the Wii going the way of the Gamecube (only owned by little kids and Nintendo lovers/fanboys) or Nintendo will have released another console that's fun, but not a serious option for a gamer. Of course, this is presuming that Blu-Ray wins the format war (likely, seeing as they already own 90% of the computer market thanks to Dell's PC's and Notebooks, the Mac Pro and the Sony VAIO notebooks and they also own the majority of the HD movie market) or both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD stay strong and no other next-gen disc is released and succeeds.

P.S: I do not currently own either, I pre-ordered all three, tested them out for a few days, then sold them on Ebay for multiple times the original price. After testing all three I believe I will spend the money I made from the Ebay transactions and a bit of my savings to a Gaming PC with better specs and will buy the PS3 when the price has gone down significantly in about a year. Most of the stuff posted in this are facts derived from research, although a percentage came from my own findings and a fraction of a percentage is opinion.
