I have a few ceramic cups and bowls that seem to become VERY hot (hotter than the food/drink that it holds) after being zapped in the microwave.

Does this mean it has a high lead content and should I be worried about using them?

The frequencies used in microwaves are tuned to be most efficient when modifying water.
Any cup or bowl may absorb water - especially if they are washed in the dishwasher. Then, when you nuc-a-wave them, the water inside the ceramic gets heated at the same time as is the food. There have been examples where the steam cracks the ceramic, trying to escape.
There are tests available for lead, and if you suspect any content, please consider using one of these.
