My friend has been given a geography assignment to write a short paragraph or two, explaining the environmental benefit of mountains. I have no clue.

They purify the air and water, which are essential to healthy life. They protect from extreme weather like hurricanes, sun glares, etc etc. And in certain areas of the world they also provide protection from wild animal attacks like tigers, bears, elephants (they find it tough to cross mountains so they don't attack in mountainous areas).

If the mountain has enough altitude, crops that could not be grown at the level of the valley-land can be grown there.

The mountains create watersheds that can be managed to improve water supplies and provide park recreation by forestation, dams, and treatment of the waterways to lower the potential for erosion. Sport fish can be introduced into mountain streams.

The majour imp is that it doesnt allow the clouds to float on to other regions,if the all too tall
In olden days they prevent the attack from the enemies
If they are high ,they can attract the tourists,so it can become a tourist place
Many of the rivers have there origin from these mountains,they can also generate hydroenergy ,if they are falling from the top

Apart from all that, they can provide natural frontiers between countries with different cultures.
Example the Indian sub-continent with Tibet(i.e. the Himalayas)

theyre for climbing! theyre have caves and special rocks in them sometimes, and some mountains like mount everest have special meanings or special pictures or carvings in them. some are famous for things people did to them or their history, i really dont have a clue either. sry just trying to help a lil here.
