Ball bearings exposed would there be damage do to dryness ?

In my experience, the balls are always exposed and don't need lubricant at all. Lubricating them would be counterproductive, because where the lubrication is really needed is on the shaft and in the bore. This is where all of the internal friction takes place, and if there is either too much or too little lubricant, the results can be less than satisfactory. The most efficient situation is a close-fitting shaft in an adequately-lubricated bore, which will result in no abrasion and no need of excessive force. Ideally, a gentle but firm push into the bore should be sufficient. Any mechanic will tell you that preparation of the bore and shaft are critical, and that every minute spent preparing the components will result in a much higher level of satisfaction. There can be issues when the service length of the shaft is shorter than that of the bore, so it is critical that the bore is well-prepared before installation of the shaft, in order to match the service length of the bore. Preparing the bore can be done manually, or with some combination of manual and power tools. Old-school craftsmen will tell you that power tools are not needed if the craftsman is skilled in the use of his hands. In fact, many people will tell you that the shaft service life should always exceed that of the bore, because replacing a depleted shaft can be very time-consuming and not always successful. A properly-prepared bore without a reliable, serviceable shaft is not a good situation.

Good lubricants don't dry in air, the damage to
worry about would result from sand & grit getting
into those tight places.

A good Preventative Maintenance policy is always best. I find that giving attention to detail usually puts things over the top.
