These small pandas resembling raccoons with colors similar to a fox were first discovered in 1821. The name "PANDA" originated from the Nepalese word "NIGALYA PONYA", which has the meaning of "eater of bamboo due to the fact that they eat about 200,000 bamboo leaves daily (red pandas are omnivorous as they are predating other animals as well.)

Red pandas are more active early in the morning and late in the afternoon and rests most of the time midday. These animals have solitary behavior but form pairs during breeding seasons. It reaches sexual maturation at one year old and has an average life span of 14 years.

Like the giant pandas, red pandas has elongated bones on the wrist (extra thumb) used in grabbing foods. They have long furry but not prehensile tails used for balance when clinging up on the trees.

Red Pandas are found in the temperate forests of the Himalayas and some high mountain areas of China and Myanmar, and in some Asian countries. Currently red pandas are placed on ENDANGERED STATUS as most of their habitats had been altered.
