Actually, if you go to ANY website (even this one) the IP address automatically gets recorded in the statistics software (I use Google Analytics).

Normally it's used for marketing purposes so that the webmaster knows where the visitors are mostly coming from, what OS they are operating and what internet browser they are using.

So if most of the website users use Windows XP, IE6 and coming from USA, then they will optimize the site for those using Windows XP running IE6 and those living in USA.

In rare cases when there is something illegal that happened, the police and fbi can subpoena the IP address to track where the user comes from (like if someone threatened to bomb a place and after that it was bombed).

Every web site you visit has your IP address, it needs the address to send you the page. Sites can easily use javascript to get your OS and browser name/version if they want to.

The only difference is that this site displays your IP address for everyone else to read. No harm, unless there's some reason to keep that secret. Why keep it secret? The only reason I can think of is you're at work, your employer is your ISP, and you don't want someone to know who you work for. (That's not too hard to do, though the result isn't always informative.)

Quite frankly anytime you go onto a site it logs your IP number as a visitor to the page. So its perfectly normal, just don't go on bad sites and you'll be fine. Your IP address doesn't give away information. It just identifies your computer. Its like a name.

that's recording or archiving your IP tackle. That in basic terms potential that in case you do something unlawful, they'd have the flexibility to grant the IP tackle to the police who can discover out which highway tackle it belongs to. So that's a warning to be nice.
