Even without invoking superstition or religion, the number 666 has many very curious properties - can it all be coincidence...?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/666_(number)
* 666 is the sum of the first 36 natural numbers, and thus a triangular number. Since 36 is both square and triangular, it's also a doubly triangular number.

* 666 is the sum of the squares of the first seven primes:
666 = 2² +3² +5² +7² +11² +13² +17²

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/BeastNumber.html

* Golden ratio φ = -2 sin (666°) = - 2 cos(6*6*6°)
[Very fishy!?!]

* It's a sum and difference of the first three 6th powers
666 = 1^6 - 2^6 + 3^6

* There are (exactly) six 6s in 666^6

* Sum of all the numbers on a roulette wheel
* Sum of the first 144 digits of Pi
* Sum of Roman numerals from I to D is 666 (DCLXVI).

Other:
* The sum of the ASCII character codes for INDONESIA gives 666.
* "666" is the combination of the mysterious suitcase retrieved by Vincent Vega and Jules in Pulp Fiction.

No, not all of these are random coincidences, the golden ratio one is an extremely unlikely result, check it out:

a) Golden ratio φ = -2 sin (666°)
φ = - 2 cos(6*6*6°)
Vanishingly likely. What is the probability that the golden ratio is the trig function of ANY integer number of degrees? It's about zero.

b) As to the sum-of-first-7-primes one, yes it's a coincidence, but there's only a ~0.3% chance of it landing on 666.

* 666 is the sum of the squares of the first seven primes:
666 = 2² +3² +5² +7² +11² +13² +17²

And this one is also very unlikely (<1%)
c) It's a sum and difference of the first three 6th powers
666 = 1^6 - 2^6 + 3^6

So the probability of just these three properties we mentioned alone coinciding on ANY arbitrary integer is well below 10^-4 or more.

Well why don't you all try to explain the relation between the golden ratio φ and
36° = 180°/5 (interior angle subtended by each face of a decagon)?
Why should φ have any connection with a decagon?

* Golden ratio φ = -2 sin (666°) = - 2 cos(6*6*6°) = -2 sin (36°) = -2 cos(54°)

Scythian answered it in the spirit with an even more fringe factoid... and even turned my question about the golden ratio into a separate question.

If Scythian was a cat, curiosity would have killed him nine times over.

Here's another:

BernoulliB(6) * Gamma(6) * Harmonic(6) = 7

The number 666 is peculiarly fecund in still more interesting properties, such as:

666 = 1³ + 2³ + 3³ + 4³ + 5³ + 6³ + 5³ + 4³ + 3³ + 2³ + 1³

Addendum: The connection between the Golden Ratio and the decagon can be seen by drawing a 5-pointed star. By examining geometric ratios found within the 5-pointed star, the equation x² = x +1 arises easily, in which x is the Golden Ratio as a solution. It could help if you drew an extra line between 2 of the 5 interior points of the 5-pointed star, and then looked at two different kinds of triangle similarities within the figure.

Hmm... I didn't know that. I personally don't feel like three number is a threat to me in any way. I mean, they're just numbers! Some superstitions make no sense to me at all.

Just comes to show; You look hard enough, you can find anything.

Remember _all_ numbers are special in one way or another. If there is a number that you can think of that is not special, it is now special because it is the first non-special number!
