It's a first-floor bath with a sliding door between a toilet and the tub - there's a sink on either side of the door. I'll tear out the carpet to save time and $, but there is linoleum under that. Don't think we need a new subfloor. I'd buy the tile, the vanities and the toilet if it would offset the cost. How much should this be? I've heard a range of prices that goes from reasonable to ridiculous.

Can you do any of the tiling or vanity installation yourself? I am stating the obvious, but if you can do some of the labor yourself, that is where most of the expense is going to come from. Depending on the size of the bathroom, you should be able to find some discount tile if you contact local tile dealers or your home supply store and look for the closeout deals (usually tile that has been discontinued). There are a lot of books out there that can help you with the tile installation. If you are looking for a deal on the vanity you can find that on-line. Here is the site that I use to buy the cabinets for my rental properties... should be able to get a good deal there: www.rtacabinetstore.com Make sure that you find a licensed contractor or handyman... the last thing you want to do is hire someone that just causes more problems.

One thing you seem to forget is that just to re and re what you have with something different can vary from place to place. Why you would have carpet in a bathroom is beyond me , and I wouldn`t even touch it to remove it . Great place for mold buildup. the linoleum should also be removed. As for the sub floor , If you are a contractor then you can make that choice and would all ready know the price. Go to home depot or Lowe's and get a price. I Can`t really even ball park it with out knowing the dimensions of the room. Tiles can range from $1 -80 sq ft, Toilets $100 and up vanities are determined by what you want, just to do the tile is usually $2.50 sq ft. Average bathroom can run between $4500-15000 and that also depends on where you live. The planet is a big place and we all don`t live on the same street as you do

Basic Bathroom Remodel

Without knowing how YOU define ridiculous; and after remodeling more bathrooms than much else; I suggest you can estimate a cost of approx. $100 per sq. ft. not including fixtures.

As one answer states; the major portion of the expense is labor; most especially removal of anything including stripping down to the sub floor. Obviously offsetting cost is everyones concern; even for honest trades people. Coordinating with the trades people however; in what you intend to supply should be something to consider. Work with them after Gutting to determine if what they can do; fits with what you supply. That process is something I go through long before I ever get into the re building.

The price depends on the quality of the material you buy, You said you would buy some of the matrial, The way I work is , I pick up what you want at whole sale and pass the saveings on to the customer Plumbing fixtuers the mark up is anywhere from 50%-150% % your big box stores, Tile 50% a good contractor will charge you the top price , Labour would be aprox $1,800.00 to $2,400.00 taking any problems in to count. This is labour and dump fees only

bathrooms and kitchens range so much because of so many variations, it also depends where you are at....most of the time when you remold er bath you need to update plumbing, also electrical if you want jacuzzi tubs etc.....in south florida just the labor cost, with a licensed contractor about 3000 to start, to about 500, to redo plumb, elec and install new tub.
