The company producing them stops doing so. However, it remains protected by copyright law for the normal term (95 years in the U.S.A.) and does not enter public domain.

I distinctly remember that the old board game "Bonkers!" was first copyrighted and distributed by Parker Brothers in the 1970's. This game did not sell very well. Later "Bonkers!" was copywrited and distributed by Milton Bradley in the 1980's with only minor rules changes. I don't know how Milton Bradley got away with this, but I know they did it.
