I have friends that work in fast food restaurants, their employees cannot take any left overs, these chain of restaurants don't donate to the shelters but THROW AWAY all the food. In the summer I went to a very well known place to get a donut, right around midnight, the cashier gave a couple of xtras because everything else was going to the garbage. What is wrong with America? well, I also know that some hotels do donate left overs to the shelters and local food pantries. But if there were enough restaurants donating food, there wouln't be any elderly or children going to bed hungry each and every day in this country.

Most fast food loses quality quickly if not served and consumed promptly. Items that do have longer hold times are kept for service the next day for economy (just like regular restaurants).
There is also a social stigma attached to fast food in this context: a restaurant donating "quality" food is fine; a franchise shop sending left-over "junk food" Bubba Burgers would get hammered.

i work as a manager in fast food we are legally not allowed to donate the food because of the threat of being sued. it really is a shame all that food goes right into the dumpster, i have let someone take food home before and later found out the kid sold it.

they mostly throw it away, as it is considered 'stale' within a very short time. also, to take food to a soup kitchen or food pantry, it often must be transported in refrigerated transports, which both the restaurant and the charities are lacking. regulations vary city by city, however. I do know of many restaurants that will give food to those who ask for it, either out the back door or to take with them, for those who ask politely and don't abuse the generosity.

back in the olden days- I worked at MCD and after a certain time, we had to throw away burgers that had set out too long. We were told not told to throw away- actually had a lady fired for saving the food. IT has to do with the FDA regulations.

They throw it away, they actually are not allowed to donate it. But homeless and hungry people do dumpster dive for the food, sad huh?
Additionally: enough Grains rot in the silos of the United States each year to Cure world hunger.

Well, I worked at a Taco Bell and they would just bag up the extra food at the end of the night and store it to use the next day. It was called "Carry Over".

I have worked in several places that throw out left overs. Only occasionally was it even suggested either due to it being holidays or a lot of food.

i think some just throw it out and some donate it. i agree with the hang out at the dumpster thing. unless you ask it's the only way to know and even then someone might lie to you because they have to make the place look good.

Many years ago I worked at a small pizza place. Usually the employees ate what was either not fit for the customer, left over due to pranks, or mismade.
