Sadly, your kids are in for a real shock when you finally let them loose and they head out on their own.
Sheltering them from the stuff that you think they shouldn't witness will give them the thin skins that will make life a painful place to be.
Fair play and ethics are great things to instill in your children, but insulating them from reality can only be harmful down the line.

NEVER, maybe you should just not take your kids to hockey games. Want to talk about how VIOLENT football games look? Come on almost every play ends with a guy being thrown to the ground. How about Baseball when a guy runs over the catcher? Take your kids to Basketball, at least then they will learn you can't touch anyone. Maybe if you learned the importance of Fighting in hockey and explained it when your kids are old enough that they would understand you'd be fine with it. Either that or take them to a Ladies' College game, I don't think they allow fighting in the Ladies' game. I find it funny though that you want to teach them fair play and have a problem with fighting, since that is one of the main purposes of fighting. Although if you live in a town with bandwagon fans instead of educated fans then the cheers for a fight would be bad. After all the people would cheer for a fight breaking out, like a NASCAR fan that watches for a crash.

fair and ethic play? both guys have equal shots at beating each other up. its not like one has their hands tied. how about teaching them about the love of the game. fighting happens when two guys are working their butts off so they dont let down their teamates and lose their respect, and they are willling to put their own personal health on the line for the chance to prove to everyone that are willing to sacrifice for the sake of the team. a fight can turn the tide of the game, and shift momentum to one side, which can make anything possible. fights are one special moment in sports that should never be outlawed.

Fighting won't stop in hockey. I disagree with the idea that fighting is the main draw that hockey has for its fans. The game is so fast and requires so much teamwork. What you could do is show them that there are consequences if someone chooses to fight. Did the guy lose his cool and cost his team dearly? It's just like life, as there are consequences to any choice we make. Ultimately your kids are going to have stuff happen to them and they will have to choose what to do. Have you ever seen the 1977 Paul Newman movie, "Slap Shot?" I love the guy's description of the various reasons for being sent to the sin bin, all acted out in slap-stick fashion. But then he says something like, "then you go to the box and feel shame." Check out the clip and have a laugh.
PS- I just found this clip and had to add it. It's a news story about one of the Hanson brothers teaching hockey to kids in Pittsburgh.

Take them to a college game. Fighting isn't allowed in college.
As far as fair play, fighting in hockey is as fair as it gets. How about teaching your kids the value of sticking up for your friends and co-workers, leadership, courage, and how to stand up for yourself in the face of a bully.
Remember, you're raising men, not *******.

"Fair play" and "ethics" are not integral parts of Hockey.
INFACT, that is the sole purpose OF hockey, like most sports, including wrestling. There IS a specific set of rules, but the Human being needs a way to let go of agression in a useful way. Hocky fights are necessary to keep the teams at thier' best. Next thing you will be complaining that "Final Fantasy" video games are too violent. And I will have to cast 'fire' on you to prove you wrong. -.-

I am guessing you don't take your kids to any sporting event. You can't tell me that you can't teach them on your own, while still being able to take them to a hockey game so they can expierence that feeling.
I take my ten and nine year old daughters to many hockey games, it seems when they see a fight, they don't walk out of scotiabank place and beat the crap out of each other.
Tell them ... Hands are for helping not for hitting .. lol.

Umm, how bout never. Like everyone above me has said, fighting is a part of the game, and a part of life. I am not one to tell you how to raise your kids, but fighting is a part of just about everything. If you think your going to be able to keep them away from fighting forever, you got another thing coming. It's sad, yes, but it's true. Me, personally? I hope they never get rid of the fighting part of hockey. It's been a part of the game since long before I started watching the game, and hopfully it will be a part of the game long after I've stopped watching.

Can't insulate your children like that. It will backfire when they encounter a situation where they won't have a choice about fighting. It will pervade their thinking in situations where they will be challenged and have to rely on their resources. So, if they are in a corporate boardroom trying to promote an idea, all someone would need to do is to raise their voice and your kid is going to back down. The best thing for kids is to let them learn on their own how to deal with the ugly side of life.
Don't send them into battle without their mettle.

In Hockey, fighting is part of the game.
You know people fight in real life as well.
You should not teach someone TO fight but it is advisable to teach a child how to fight.
Check out McCarty avenging Draper.
There are only a couple of ways to get a man trophy like that!

if you are waiting for someone to stop fighting in hockey, pick up another sport because that is the only thing attracting fans now. Kids are going to be exposed to violence all the time, at least now you will be there with them to teach them, rather then them watching fights on the internet or at school. If you are there you can teach them that it is wrong
