^_^ is a very popular with Asians. I think it was retrospectively used for Hello Kitty after this smiley was already in use.

hahaha i didn't know what that mean for years
i had a friend that always typed it and i thought it indicated a sound she made
finally- i asked her and she said, "it means the same thing as a happy face"
