Can't use electricity - I'm on solar power and, this far north, there is only on average four full hours of sunlight daily.

My first stop was the local feed stores/farm supplies but none had it (including Big R).

I'm not sure I understand the rubber ball thing???

You can go to any of your Farm/Ranch stores or suppliers and get one. I live in South Dakota and i know you can get them anywhere farm/ ranch supplies are sold.

we use to have an electic tank heater.
got it at tractor suppy
it was safe , and never had a problem with it... kept the water almost room tempature all winter...

plug it in and it sits on the bottom of the tank
