I like to buy coffee table books or nice bird feeders. Last year I bought my dad a Bible with thumb indentations. He loved that and said he wouldn't have thought to buy it for him self.

That's OK. All you've got to do is go to Walmart and get a cheep tool set. It doesn't have to be very fancy or anything, just something that can get the job done. Plus, Dads really like tools. I got my dad a tool set for Christmas a couple years ago and he still uses it today.
(P.S. Either way it is the thought that counts)

How about a non-traditional gift...some good father/daughter quality time and having fun maybe playing:
-golf or hitting golf balls at a golf range
(That would be pretty inexpensive. Most places have free golf clubs you could use and you'd only have to pay for the rental golf balls.)
-bowling
(only would have to pay for rental shoes & ball)
-skiing or sailing
(depending on where you live & how the weather is, you'd only have to pay for rental skiis or rental boat)
Another idea is baking him his favorite dessert, maybe a Christmas cake or Christmas cookies or candy :)

If he's into sports get him some gear from his favorite team. If he's into golf get him a gift card to a sporting goods store. If he's a coffee drinker get him some gourment coffee grounds. If he likes to read get him a subscription to the New Yorker.
