OK, I realize there will be a lot of differences in opinions of rock. So, the door is open to any and all. What made it the best. Was it the songs, the groups or, was it the movie that made it work?

The Crow Soundtrack

Such an amazing soundtrack where every song was awesome. The roster of bands on this thing still blows my mind.

NIN
Jesus & Mary Chain
Medicine
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
Machines of Loving Grace
The Cure
Helmet
Rage Against The Machine
Pantera

Plus, the movie was also great. Too bad Brandon Lee had to die because that could have been a serious franchise. The sequals without him were a joke.

Of course a couple early Pink Floyd albums come to mind; 'More', and 'Obscured by Clouds' (both soundtracks).
There's several others that are notable as well:

Death Wish 2 - Jimmy Page

The Roadie - Alice Cooper, Joe Ely, Cheap Trick, Blondie, Styx, Pat Benetar, etc.

Rushmore - The Kinks, Cat Stevens, The Who, Faces, John Lennon, Mark Mothersbaugh(Devo)

Phantom of the Paradise - Featuring original 'Glam Rock' type material by Paul Williams.

Dazed and Confused - Foghat, Nazareth, Black Oak Arkansas, Deep Purple, Sweet, Black Sabbath, Kiss.

American Graffiti - Buddy Holly, Fats Domio, Chuck Berry, etc.

Two Lane Blacktop - The Doors, Arlo Guthrie, Kris Kristofferson, John Hammond Jr.

Heavy Metal - Devo, BOC, Sammy Hagar, Black Sabbath, etc.

Almost Famous - The Allman Brothers, The Beach Boys, The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin.

Rocky Horror Picture Show - This one requires no explaination.

Good Morning Vietnam - The Beach Boys, Them, Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames, James Brown, The Grass Roots.

Wayne's World - Queen, Cinderella, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Alice Cooper, etc.

Head - The Monkees

The Lost Boys - INXS, Echo and the Bunnymen, Roger Daltrey, etc

Superfly - Curtis Mayfield

Inferno - Keith Emerson

Reservoir Dogs - George Baker Selection, Steelers Wheel, Blue Swede, Joe Tex.

Easy Rider - Jimi Hendrix, Electric Prunes, Steppenwolf, The Band.

Top Gun - Cheap Trick, Berlin, Loverboy, Miami Sound Machine, Kenny Loggins.

The most enjoyable for me was the 'Dazed and Confused' soundtrack. It definitely helped the movie!
Close behind would be 'Heavy Metal', and 'Almost Famous'.
I think if I was to choose a favorite soundtrack 30 years ago, I would have answered with American Graffiti. So many great classic songs on that one!

Almost all My favorite Movies Soundtracks are non rock
The Soundtrack to The Good The Bad & The Ugly is by far and away my favorite, closesly followed by
Once Opon A Time In The West
Conan Th Barbarian
&
The Omega Man
However for rock soundtracks it has to be
Last Action Hero, not a bad song on it. It has two awesome Alice In Chains songs. One of Megadeth's best songs ever. A killer version of Dream On. And an excellent Queensryche song.

I'm completely stunned and amazed that no one has nominated "Times Square" for this spot yet. It was kind of an indie film, but to escape the overviews of some of R&P's finest; wow. It was a Robert Stigwood film from around 1980 and the most notable star was Tim Curry. It includes one of the more profane and angry songs ever, "Your Daughter Is One," and is simply a great little romp as a film that fits it to a tee.

The artists:
Suzi Quatro; The Pretenders; Roxy Music; Gary Numan; Marc Levy & Robin Gibb; Talking Heads; Joe Jackson; XTC; The Ramones; The Ruts; D.L. Byron; Lou Reed; Desmond Child & Rouge; Garland Jeffreys; The Cure; Patti Smith Group; David Johansen; and the stars from the film itself.

While I couldn't make it the "Best;" I think American Graffiti, The Big Chill, or Forest Gump affect me more personally . . .
it still makes one hell of a statement and should be checked out if you haven't already.

Almost Famous has a perfect rock and roll soundtrack complete with Simon and Garfunkel, Led Zeppelin, the Who AND Thunderclap Newman.
And this is cheating, but Pink Floyd's The wall, but the movie's soundtrack is just the album the Wall :0)

Pump Up the Volume had an excellent soundtrack with a variety of great artists - The Pixies, Concrete Blonde, Sonic Youth, and many more that didn't even make it to the soundtrack.

Natural Born Killers had an outstanding lineup of artists on the soundtrack as well.

Repo Man......got Fear, Suicidal Tendencies, Black Flag, Circle Jerks.......good stuff.

Also The Life Aquatic with David Bowie, The Stooges, Joan Baez, Devo and I bellieve five excellent Portugese covers of Bowie songs by Seu Jorge.

Great one Buzz. The Rollins and Bad Brains cover of Kick Out The Jams was a serious contender.
