which game is harder God of War 1 or 2?

God of war 1 was tougher to beat... though GOW2 had more boss fights than the first... some sections oh GOW2 were tougher... but in the overall sense GOW1 was tougher... this is probably bcoz by the time i played GOW2... the controls and gameplay was the a same as in GOW1... so was already well versed in it...

I thought GoW1 was much more challenging than GoW2.

they are about equal. I am also torn on which game i like best. However, the GOW series is definitely one of the better ones.
