I have a 99 Suzuki Grand Vitara 4x4 with 104,000 miles. I just purchased it 8 months ago and have put about 10,000 on it. I bought it through a private seller in NY. A couple of months ago it started smoking through exhaust when I turned it on now it does it more and when it's riding. I took it to my mechanic and it's not overheating so it can't be a head gasket. Also, took it to Meineke and nothing wrong with exhaust, they said they didn't find any leaks. I'm so worried because my mechanic said it might be burning oil because it's needed extra oil before my regular oil change. So, he said the engine might have to be rebuilt. Can I do anything about this to make it better and can I pursue a case with seller for doing this to me? Thanks.

if it is just doing it when it's cold it's valve stem seals if it does it all the time it's worn oil rings and being it only has 104000 means that they didn't take care of it with regular oil changes or were very hard on it while driving(hard accelerations etc, etc) try getting some stp stop smoke and combine that with 10w40 mobile clean 5000 oil and it may slow it down or eliminate the smoking all together(and just because it's not overheating doesn't mean it's not a blown head gasket)

You are definitely burning oil.
Probable sources valve guides, piston rings, or both.

A good compression check might suggest it's
only the valve guides.

Poor compression points to rings, but doesn't
rule out the valve guides.

It's an expensive engine job either way,
and at 100,000Mi. might as well do both
while you're in there.

If it wasn't smoking when you bought it,
you can't prove the seller knew about it,
so no recourse. Sorry.

Try a thicker oil, instead of 5/30 try 15/30.age on the engine creates looser tolerances and oil goes places it should not and burns.

Sounds like your burning oil. Usually means sloppy pistons/rings/valves.

it sounds as though it is burning oil and used cars sold by private sellers are being sold as is with no guarantees so you really have no recourse

You're burning oil. When buying used vehicles, you're usually buying it "as is" unless they say there's some kind of warranty.

check your fuel line or piston rings/valves

and by the way...you dont want to try a heavier viscocity oil until you check your engine. if you up the viscocity and there's a problem you will have BIG problems...like a cracked head

RINGS, VALVES OR BOTH. WHEN YOU FIRST GOT IT , IT WAS PROBABLY JUST THE VALVE SEALS IF IT ONLY DID IT AT START UP. AFTER 8 MONTHS YOU'RE PROBABLY ON YOUR OWN, SORRY.
