they have a bebe sounds monitor with head set at wallmart for like 20 or 30 dollars. you hear all kids of noise though you can hear the baby but if you are not in complete quiet you can hear everything else. the ones that use doppler. us a ultra sound it uses sound waves that bounce off the baby. you shoud talk with a doctor about that some homeopathic docters do think that the sounds can affect the babies hearing when the come out.

There are many different options for fetal monitors and it would depend on what kind you are looking for and what you really need it for. If you are just being over cautious- you might want to talk to your doctor about it. But if you are a high risk and really need something like this there are options. First of all you don't have to buy. They do have options to rent. And you might consider the grade of fetal monitor that you would like...since they have different models set at different prices. IF you want a hospital grade it will be more expensive but if not then the price will go lower. Also it's not so much about if they will work (if you buy/ rent them from a medical store) it's more can you learn to use them correctly. Knowing what you're doing is the difference between hearing a HB and not. So if you're going to freak out every time you don't hear one at home you might want to rethink your choice.

Anyway, here is some general info:

How do I know which fetal doppler is right for me?

Another important question to consider before renting a fetal doppler is which one is right for you. For the most part, there are two different types of fetal dopplers on the market - regular and digital. A regular model is very basic and will allow you to hear your unborn baby's heartbeat (rentals range from $20 to $32 per month). The digital fetal doppler will also let you hear the heartbeat, but also offers the added benefit of a digital display of your baby's heartbeats per minute or BPM (rentals range from $45 to $49 per month). Deciding between the two is usually based purely on personal preference, except in the case of a multiple pregnancy. In this instance you will need a digital display to distinguish one baby from another.

Fetal dopplers come with either a 2 or 3 MHz probe. The 2 MHz (specialty probe) probes are generally better for overweight patients as its more concentrated ultrasound emission (beam) can pass more easily through the extra layers of fat surrounding the uterus. This concentrated, lower frequency beam also enables the fetal doppler to pick up the fetal heartbeat earlier in pregnancy and often enables expecting parents to listen in as early as 8 weeks into their pregnancy.

Fetal dopplers can be rented or purchased here:

Unless you are professionally trained to operate and maintain this type of device and know how to interpret the results, you should not waste your money on such a thing. Fetal heart monitors are not intended for at home use.

Unless you need it, I would definitely not buy one. They make you panic too much.
