It's derived from Greek mythology. Most tall women would not consider the term to be flattering.

I see it as a nicer way of saying they're hulking and manlike. Many people seem to be uncomfortable with the idea of tall women so they assign certain stereotypes to them like these. It never occurs to them that tall women can be pretty and feminine. By the way, I am tall.
