This procedure works most of the time and is not terribly difficult, just lengthy.
1) Update all your antivirus and antispyware software
2) Reboot into safe mode.
3) Turn off restore points.
4) Run your antivirus and antispyware software until they come up clean.
5) Reboot into normal mode
6) Turn restore points back on.

This sounds like adware. I suggest you download Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D (they’re free), install them, update them and run them and AVG in Safe Mode. Safe Mode often prevents the malware from running and protecting itself.
Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.
To get into Safe Mode:
1. Log out and reboot your machine.
2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.
3. Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu.
4. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance. Log in as Administrator. Administrator often has no password.
5. When you're finished, log out and reboot back into normal mode.
Update and run them all regularly.
Good luck.

Not being able to look at your computer and find out what is going on with it, it is very hard, probably even impossible, to try and tell you how to fix it over yahoo answers.
Please, do not go into your registry and try and fix it that way. Doing so, since you really don't know what your doing, you could very easily mess something up then be forced to reinstall windows.
Spybot and Adaware might do the trick. If not, I would strongly suggest, since obviously reformating and reinstalling windows is not an option and we cant tell exactly what your computer is doing, take it to a professional and have them take a look at it. Will probably cost you some money but there is a greater posibility you will be able to keep your stuff.

Whatever you do, listen to "computer guy". His advice is right on, except for one minor thing he forgot to add. Use Mozilla Firefox for your default browser and forget you ever heard of Internet Explorer. While saying their popup blocker is the "best in the business", Microsoft was selling ad space to high end vendors to place ads, where? You guessed it, Internet Explorer! Firefox can be configured to deny all popups, erase your browsing history when you log off, and erase all your personal info when you log off. Very secure and very handy.

i just got this virus a couple days ago! i had a heck of time trying to find something to remove it. try SUPERAntiSpyware, it caught IE defender on my system and removed it for me and its free. i also tried the removal instructions from one of those forum websites but they were complicated and i didn't get the virus out. try superantispyware, it works and its really easy, you just wait for it to scan your system. ad-ware works fine too. i used that too. ad-ware finds a lot of tracking cookies also that supersntispyware sometimes misses, but if IE defender is the only bothering you, superantispyware works really well.

Try running anti-spyware, like AdAware. That'll get rid of most infections.
If you're actually getting hijacked, as in your page redirects via coolwebsearch or something, you'll need Hijack This or possibly a reformatted hard drive.
