Somebody decided that one and a half centimeters was the perfect amount to keep it less bulky and still have a strong seam. For us Americans, that translated to 5/8 of an inch.

I think it's just one of those things that someone decided decades ago and it has stuck, sort of. Patterns from European manufacturers often differ. Most Kwik Sew are 1/4" and some US craft patterns use less. Make sure you read your directions and don't assume. Been there, done that, have the tshirt.

For consistency in pattern making. Imagine if they were all seam allowances on all patterns were different. How confusing would that be?
