The number one is always businessperson who runs their own business whether it be in banking, medicine, law, entertainment, drugs, etc. The earning potential is unlimited as opposed to many jobs that you get paid for your time (which is limited). Even for those who mentioned a criminal enterprise, it's the head businessperson. Just look at the Godfather, Don Corleone or Scarface. They had other people working for them. Look at Bill Gates. Look at Dick Cheney's company, Halliburton.

Salary.com gives a good estimate of what you can expect to earn in a given occupation. This is of course for the USA only. As some jobs earn more or less depending where you live. For example, doctors in Canada earn about half as much as a doctor in the USA. Doesn't mean they are half as good doctors simply means there are other factors in play - the case of Canada it's universal health care (USA has private health care).
A CEO of a company has the potential to make the most money. For example, both Bill Gates and Warren Buffet were CEO's of their companies - however, they were paid mainly in stocks versus salary. Bill Gates is the richest man in the world (he's worth about $60 Billion) while Warren Buffet is number two.
So when you say "makes the most money" do you mean in salary or overall? Salary + Stock etc..

How about CEO of Microsoft or Emir of Dubai? You make the most money by running a business, or country, not by working for someone else.
